FRONTSH1P is pioneering a green transition in Poland’s Łódzkie region by moving from a linear to a circular economy. The project deploys four Circular Systemic Solutions (CSS) in key sectors like Wood Packaging, Food & Feed, Water & Nutrients, and Plastic & Rubber Waste, aiming to decarbonise and regenerate territories inclusively and replicably across Europe.
FUELPHORIA is an EU-funded project developing sustainable value chains for advanced biofuels and renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs). Coordinated by CERTH, it tests nine full-scale fuel chains in Belgium, Greece, and Spain, evaluating their impact, market readiness, and export potential. Aligned with the EU’s REPowerEU Plan and Green Deal, FUELPHORIA helps cut emissions and replace fossil fuels in hard-to-abate sectors.
PYSOLO (Pyrolysis of biomass by concentrated SOLar pOwer) offers a solution for both decarbonisation and defossilisation by preparing the ground for a fully renewable process combining concentrated solar power and biomass pyrolysis.
Thanks to the use of solar heat in the pyrolysis process, the production of valuable products, including bio-oil, biochar, and pyrogas, can be maximised, and the associated CO₂ emissions can be minimised, resulting in economic and environmental benefits compared to conventional pyrolysis. The proposed system uses a particle heat carrier, ensuring operational flexibility and avoiding the need for a heat transfer surface in the pyrolysis reactor, which facilitates the system scale-up.
PYRAGRAF aims to optimise agricultural and forestry residues to increase renewable energy use, cut carbon footprints, and enhance rural sustainability. A mobile pyrolysis unit, combining a solar-assisted gasifier, biomass dryer, and reactor, produces biochar, wood vinegar, pyrogas, and bio-oil for agriculture, energy, and ecosystem services, reducing GHG emissions and fossil fuel reliance.
Field demonstrations in Portugal, Germany, and Turkey engage stakeholders to test the unit and assess the product's potential under various soil types, crops, and climates, contributing to low-carbon development in line with EU policies.
